Hello, and Welcome to the Bacon Blog

The only place on the web where you can get a fresh slice of Bacon delivered straight to your door every Friday morning - free of charge.

I make no attempt to compete with those hard-working souls who file daily reports about teams, trades and talented teenagers traveling to this campus or that. I'm just trying to tell interesting stories about people who happen to be involved in sports. Many of these stories come from my weekly sports commentaries on Michigan Public Radio, occasional free-lance pieces, or just my own curiosity - all here for you to listen, read and review, as you see fit.

You can also check out the most popular pieces in the archives, including my take on the Wisdom of Plaxico Buress, Michael Phelps's best friend, and Kids' Games You Shouldn't Try At Home, among others.

I hope you like them - and sign up to receive a slice of Bacon every week.  All the cool kids are doing it.

Thanks for stopping by.

-John U. Bacon

Another reason to look forward to Fridays!

Good thing you have the copyright notice at the bottom... watch out for the likes of Colin Cowherd.

      Ha - Thanks Chris!

And yes, that copyright, I'm sure, is bullet-proof. I can't imagine any unethical journalist ever borrowing a line from these pieces. After all, they're journalists!

I've already found that, in some ways, bloggers are more scrupulous, as they'll freely cite the work they're discussing, with a link.

It seems the future is already upon us.

No comment on the happenings of Saturday night's hockey game yet? I thought for sure I'd see something particularly if it involved "the greatest sport in the world."

    Go Pioneers!

      Dear Baked Potato,

Thank you for your note. I was sorely tempted to comment on the mugging of UM's Steve Kempfer at the end of the Michigan-Michigan State hockey game last Saturday -- honestly, the most malicious intent I've ever witness at a hockey game. But then I decided to stick to my mission -- one polished commentary a week, instead of daily dispatches -- and leave the breaking news to those who do it better.

But if you wanted to hear what I had to say about it, the shows on WTKA (Off the Field Sundays, 10-11, the Big Show Mondays, 3-6, and the Red Berenson Show Tuesdays, 6-7), would have given you all you would ever want to hear from me on this subject!

That said, you are correct: Hockey IS the greatest sport in the world (this is a fact, not opinion). And, although it pains me to do it, after Saturday's game, hats off to Pioneer. Ugh.

      Dear William,

Thanks for your kind comments. This is obviously new territory for me, and after getting hooked on some of my favorite blogs (mgoblog.com, mvictors.com, papertigernomore.com), the bar is quite high, so I'm just trying to stick with what I feel I do best.

And no worries, despite your praise, I will not be calling your bluff.

However, we WILL continue to charge for "Bo's Lasting Lessons" for some time to come! (Thanks for your comments, there, too. The website has more information if you want it.)

    Hi,
The NBA playoffs are right around the corner and the howls of complaint are being heard across North America. Teams in the West are getting screwed, the East lets in bad teams, my team deserves to be in more then Atlanta, blah blah blah.
