Gone Playin'
Dear Loyal Readers,
Given the Big Ten Media days Monday and Tuesday and teaching at Northwestern's Medill School on Tuesdays -- all in Chicago -- plus full-day meetings the rest of the week and the UM hockey alumni meeting and -- well, I'll spare you my sob story, if it isn't too late to do so. Long story short, it's a week off at the Bacon Blog. I'll probably be able to take one more before the summer's done and we all dig in for a busy fall.
In the meantime, if you want to see former NHL players make me look stupid on the ice (and possibly off it), the Michigan alumni hockey weekend starts tonight at 5:30 at Yost. The first game is 35-and-over (that's me, off the alternate alternate list, for those who didn't play for Michigan and really have no business being on the ice), and the second game featuring current NHLers is at 6:30.
Again, thanks for reading -- we just topped 25K subscribers! -- and I look forward to writing more next week, and the weeks to come. I hope you're enjoying this as much as I am. You've been great!
-John
p.s. If I don't return from tonight's game, avenge my death.

Have fun... keep your stick down and your head up!
Perhaps for your next article, we can examine the maddening behavior of Bill Martin.
In response to fans outrage at the non-conference scheduling, Martin explains he needs the 8th home game to balance the budget.
However, recent numbers show the department would have been in the black without the extra MAC/Div I-AA game.
Leading to a further loss of credibility, Barnacle Bill throws his reservations about home and home series out the window and decides to travel to East Hartford in 2013. Which by the way seats ~40K. Ugh!
So we get UCONN instead of UGA and none of the reasons Martin has previously offered against playing a big time team pass his own tests!
When most of the nation is playing 1-AA and directional universities in September, would fans of college football in general rather see Michigan v. Georgia for example, the Big House and "between the hedges", or would those same folks rather see 40,000 show up in East Hartford for Michigan and UCONN?
What is the bigger matchup? What game draws more hype? Would not U-M and UGA have benefits other than padding the department's balance sheet? Like national exposure and help with recruiting?!
I think it's fair to say 99.999% of college football fans would NOT answer UCONN... or Delaware State, or App State or the freaking MAC.
Oh how I wish Bill Martin would go; we actually have an AD more out of touch than Tom Goss. I did not think that was possible.

How much did they have to pay you for your attendance at this event? Red knew you were worth at least 3 goals.
